MMC have high thermal conductivity and low thermal expansion. These values are changeable depending on the metal and the Metal/Ceramics ratio. For example, MMC can prevent stress from high temperature as it has similar thermal expansion values to the materials it is in contact with. Due to high thermal conductivity, MMC are suitable as heat sink base materials.

One of the disadvantages of Ceramics is to chip easily. MMCs have high fracture toughness because they are Metal/Ceramic composite materials. Also, MMC can easily be made in larger sizes and formed/molded in complex shapes.

High Vibration Damping

SA(SiC / Al)

MMC can offer higher vibration damping than other composites materials.
Compared to conventional materials, the half-life of vibration is very short, so MMC are suitable for stop & go parts. Check this high vibration damping in the video below.

MMC is being used in a Japanese satellite, "Hayabusa 2", as rings on its Microwave Discharge Ion Engine, because of its light weight, low thermal expansion and quick absorption of vibration.

Usage Example: for Machine tool(4m Rotary Grinder)
